INTRODUCTION



     This guide is the continuation of our work in
the course, Internet: Resource Discovery and Organization,
at the University of Michigan School of
Information and Library Studies (see 12.0).
     Our intention was to locate and compile as many
resources as possible available on the Internet in the
subject area of film and video. We discovered that there
are many more resources than we expected. Therefore, this
guide should not be considered the definitive source on
this subject, but as a helpful starting point.
     This guide includes textual resources which
relate to film and video. We do not include
resources such as video clips or graphics, though
some of the text resources included may lead the
user to them.  Not all resources are exclusively
related to film and video. Some of the resources also
include other media. Inclusion in the guide
indicates that the content of the resource pertains
significantly to film and video. We did not
include sources in languages other than English,
however, we do include resources which list,
evaluate, and discuss foreign films.
     Our philosophy is that each resource should be
available free of charge.  However, included in version
2.0 of the guide is a new section entitled "commercial
resources."  These are resources which do involve cost in
the format of video and laser disc retail.  However, we
decided to include them because browsing each
resource is free, these resources reflect the evolving
facet of business on the Internet, and they could be
potentially useful resources to consumers and selectors.
We should point out that we have not purchased anything
from these retailers and thus cannot offer any comments
regarding the quality of service or product.
     Additionally, it is not the purpose of this
guide to explain how to use the tools of the
Internet such as telnet, ftp, gopher or WWW.
Descriptions and explanations on how to use these
tools can be found in many places on the Internet.
See Note on the Terms (9.0) for suggested resources
that can show you how to use these tools to navigate
the Internet.
     The descriptions and evaluations of the
resources are based on our observations from
September 1993 to June 1994, and we do not claim
to be experts. We also cannot claim that this guide is
comprehensive; resources on the Internet are
constantly changing and complete information on some
resources was not available.
     We intend to maintain this guide as an ongoing
project and would encourage any comments,
corrections, suggestions for additions, and/or
compliments. Feel free to use this guide to enhance
your recreational or academic pursuits, but please
keep our names on it and let us know what you think.


USING THIS GUIDE

     This guide is organized by the format/function
of the resource, which is based on our perceptions
of how people might approach looking for film/video
resources.  For example, someone might be interested
in movie reviews, but not interested in a discussion
of film equipment, whereas another person might be
searching for a list of video titles for a Asian-
American studies course.  Therefore we have set off
reviews, filmographies, discussions, etc., as separate
sections of the document, with a Table of Contents which
indicates the organization and an index which will help in
locating a specific resource.
     To provide the user with a sort of "you are
here" indication, we have included a numbering
system for each resource which indicates its place
in the guide.
     If a question mark appears after a heading (for
example Contact: ?), this means that we were not
able to locate this information.  We would welcome
any help in completing the entries.

Description:  This review database is structured
  with the SPIGopher software, and searching can be
  to other SPIGopher resources (see the WATMEDIA AV

  searched in many ways including title, MPA
  rating, quality rating, cast, year of release,
  keywords, etc.  The reviews are often short,
  and the majority of films included seem to be
  wide releases.  Brief searching instructions are
  included.
Additional Comments:  Anyone can add a review to
  to the database, so the reviews may vary in
  quality and are sometimes one-sentence long.
  The database maintainer reserves the right to
  remove reviews.

  resource we have found that provides a list of stock
  footage libraries.

  an extent, but we were also able to correspond with a
  "real" person concerning information.  NOTE:  This is a
  commercial service - we have not dealt with this company
  and cannot provide any comments about the quality of
  service nor the quality of the products.  The information
  message also states that the catalogs are updated at
  least once a month.  This seems to hold true, as we were
  promptly notified of an update to the laserdisc catalog,
  which now includes 7,500+ items.

     We feel that there are some terms used in the
guide which may not be self-explanatory.  Included
here are our explanations for these terms.  For more
detailed explanations, there are many Internet
handbooks available both commercially and on the
Internet.  Some titles are recommended by Jim
Milles: [e-mail] in, "Where To Start"
For New Internet Users.  This list is available by
anonymous ftp at sluaxa.slu.edu, cd/pub/millesjg,
file newusers.faq. and on the SLU gopher (gopher
sluava.slu.edu, "Library Services/SLU  Law Library
Services/Internet Training and Access Info").
Finally, it can be requested by e-mail from the

THE TERMS:

Archived:  Past messages from listserv and news
  group discussions are often saved or "archived"
  and often may be searched.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Question):  A FAQ is generally a
  kind of "fact" list or compilation of information about
  a certain subject or resource.

Gateway Listserv:  A listserv which is also available as a
  USENET news group.

Listserv (list):  An electronic discussion group similar
  to a mailing list.  The procedure for subscribing
  to a listserv usually has a standard format.  You
  must send an e-mail message to the listserv
  address.  For example, to subscribe to SCREEN-L,
  send a message to [e-mail]
  consisting only of:
  SUBSCRIBE SCREEN-L Yourfirstname Yourlastname

Moderated:  A moderated listserv or news group has
  a person responsible for making sure that the
  messages sent to that group are appropriate to
  the discussion.

Originating Body/Author:  The person, group, or
  organization chiefly responsible for the creation
  the resource.

Spoiler:  Giving away the ending or a crucial
  moment of a film.

URL:  Universal Resource Locator - a unique address
  of a resource, which may be used to directly
  access the resource through a World Wide Web
  client like Mosaic.  A URL indicates the format
  of a resource.

USENET news groups:  The postings on news groups
  are gathered by a program called a news reader.
  Depending on the news reader available to you,
  you can read a very large variety of discussion
  topics.  Format and content can be similar to
  that found on listservs, but instead of coming to
  like your e-mail, you need to retrieve it from
  your USENET news server.

Volume:  Determinations of volume are indicated so
  people know what to expect when they subscribe to
  a Listserv or a news group.  It must be remembered
  these determinations were made over limited
  periods of time from September 1993 and December
  1993.  Determination of volume is as follows:
  High volume:  90 - 100 posts a day.
  Medium volume:  45 - 55 posts a day
  Low volume:  Less than 10 posts a day

     PROJECT


     The Internet: Resource Discovery and
Organization course (URL:  gopher://sils.umich.edu/
11/learnatsils/classmatl/606) is part of a project
at the School of Information and Library Studies at
the University of Michigan to develop a
clearinghouse of subject-oriented Internet resource
guides.  The objective of these guides is to
discover, qualitatively describe and organize
Internet resources in many subject areas.
